Driveway Cost by Size

“One-car” and “two-car” are handy labels, but they are not measurements. A 20-by-20-foot parking pad is 400 square feet. Add a 12-by-40-foot approach and the job grows to 880 square feet before counting the apron, curves, or a turnaround.
For rough 2026 planning, this guide uses $5-$13 per square foot for a new standard asphalt driveway. Replacement work can cost more, especially when the job includes poor soil, drainage repairs, a thicker pavement section, or difficult truck access. An overlay may cost less, but only when the existing pavement and base are sound enough to support it.
Cost table by actual paved area
| Paved area | Low scenario: $5/sq. ft. | Mid scenario: $9/sq. ft. | High scenario: $13/sq. ft. |
|---|---|---|---|
| 300 sq. ft. | $1,500 | $2,700 | $3,900 |
| 400 sq. ft. | $2,000 | $3,600 | $5,200 |
| 500 sq. ft. | $2,500 | $4,500 | $6,500 |
| 600 sq. ft. | $3,000 | $5,400 | $7,800 |
| 800 sq. ft. | $4,000 | $7,200 | $10,400 |
| 1,000 sq. ft. | $5,000 | $9,000 | $13,000 |
| 1,200 sq. ft. | $6,000 | $10,800 | $15,600 |
| 1,500 sq. ft. | $7,500 | $13,500 | $19,500 |
| 2,000 sq. ft. | $10,000 | $18,000 | $26,000 |
These values are arithmetic scenarios, not market averages or quotes. The mid scenario exists to make comparisons easier, not to predict what a local contractor will charge.
Common layouts and why labels mislead
| Layout example | Dimensions | Area before extras |
|---|---|---|
| Compact parking pad | 10 × 20 ft. | 200 sq. ft. |
| Wider single-car pad | 12 × 24 ft. | 288 sq. ft. |
| Compact two-car pad | 20 × 20 ft. | 400 sq. ft. |
| Comfortable two-car pad | 24 × 24 ft. | 576 sq. ft. |
| Three-car pad | 30 × 24 ft. | 720 sq. ft. |
| Single lane approach | 12 × 50 ft. | 600 sq. ft. |
Real projects combine these shapes. A two-car garage does not mean a 400-square-foot driveway if there is a long approach. Conversely, a short urban driveway can have a small area but a high unit price because crew mobilization and handwork remain.
Build the estimate in five steps
1. Split the pavement into simple shapes
Use rectangles for straight sections, triangles for flares, and circles or semicircles for turnarounds. Measure each separately. Do not count lawn or landscaping inside the outline.
2. Calculate each area
- Rectangle:
length × width - Triangle:
(base × height) ÷ 2 - Circle:
3.1416 × radius² - Semicircle:
(3.1416 × radius²) ÷ 2
Add all areas. If dimensions are in feet, the answer is square feet.
3. Decide which project type applies
| Project type | Scope |
|---|---|
| New installation | Soil preparation plus a complete pavement section. |
| Replacement | Removal and rebuilding, with uncertain base repair. |
| Overlay | New asphalt over a structurally suitable existing pavement. |
| Repair | Isolated work, often subject to minimum mobilization charges. |
Do not use a new-installation rate for a replacement without including removal and disposal.
4. Run more than one scenario
Use a low, middle, and high rate rather than a single number. The range makes hidden assumptions visible. Then add known separate items such as drainage structures, permits, or landscape restoration.
5. Validate with itemized bids
Give each contractor the same sketch, approximate area, desired use, and known drainage concerns. Ask each to state measured area, removal, compacted base and asphalt thickness, drainage plan, transitions, and exclusions.
Quick estimate
Ballpark only, not a binding quote. This runs on our calculator’s working rates, so it lands tighter than the national ranges quoted above — those span every market in the country. Measure it precisely on the map →
Examples
Example A: short two-car driveway
- Parking pad: 22 × 22 = 484 sq. ft.
- Street flare: 8 × 4 ÷ 2 = 16 sq. ft.
- Total: 500 sq. ft.
- Planning range at $5-$13: $2,500-$6,500
Example B: two-car pad with approach
- Parking pad: 24 × 24 = 576 sq. ft.
- Approach: 12 × 45 = 540 sq. ft.
- Two triangular flares: 2 × (6 × 5 ÷ 2) = 30 sq. ft.
- Total: 1,146 sq. ft.
- Planning range at $5-$13: $5,730-$14,898
Round preliminary budgets rather than treating the last dollar as precise. The calculator should display about $5,700-$14,900, then explain what could change it.
Example C: circular turnaround
A 30-foot-diameter circle has a 15-foot radius:
3.1416 × 15² = about 707 square feet
If a 12-by-60-foot lane feeds the circle, add 720 square feet for a combined 1,427 square feet. Subtract any center island only if it will not be paved.
Why larger projects are not always proportionally more expensive
Unit prices may decline as area increases because trucking, equipment delivery, setup, and crew mobilization are spread across more pavement. But a large project can still have a high unit price when it includes heavy excavation, retaining work, steep grades, extensive drainage, thick pavement, or difficult truck access.
Small patches can have especially high per-square-foot prices because a paving crew and equipment must still reach the site.
Size does not define thickness
A 1,000-square-foot driveway used by passenger vehicles and the same area used by delivery trucks do not require the same design. Soil support, water, freeze-thaw exposure, vehicle loads, and turning movements matter. Ask for compacted layer thicknesses and a written pavement section. See Asphalt Driveway Thickness and Base.
Estimate accuracy checklist
- Include the approach, apron, parking pad, flares, and turnaround.
- Measure the proposed outline, including any changes to the existing pavement.
- Confirm where work stops at the street or right-of-way.
- Identify drains, utility covers, steps, walls, and garage thresholds.
- Note steep or soft areas and where water sits after rain.
- Distinguish removal, overlay, and new installation.
- Keep permit, drainage, and restoration allowances visible.
- Treat aerial/map measurement as preliminary; field-verify before ordering work.

Frequently asked questions
- How big is a two-car driveway?
- There is no universal size. A two-car parking pad might be roughly 400-600 square feet, but approaches and turnarounds can double or triple total paved area. Measure the planned outline.
- Should I add a waste percentage?
- Homeowners estimating a budget by installed square foot generally do not need to add material waste separately. Contractors should account for yield, compaction, joints, and ordering in their proposal. If the area is uncertain, use a range or add a clearly labeled measurement contingency instead of unexplained "waste."
- Can I estimate from satellite imagery?
- Yes, for early planning. Property imagery can be distorted, outdated, or obscured. Field measurements are better, and the contractor should verify quantities before a contract is signed.
- Why did my contractor measure more area than I did?
- Common causes include flares, apron limits, irregular edges, proposed widening, and different assumptions about where paving begins and ends. Ask for a marked sketch or measured quantity breakdown.
